Resume File Name: Examples and a Simple Naming System
Name your resume clearly with your name and target role. See PDF and DOCX examples, mistakes to avoid, and a system for tracking tailored versions.

HiredFast publishes AI-assisted career guidance. Examples illustrate wording; use your own facts. Review every resume and application answer before submitting it.
What should you name your resume file?
Use FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf, or add the target role when you keep several versions: Maya-Chen-Data-Analyst-Resume.pdf. Follow any filename or document-format instructions in the application first.
A useful filename tells the recipient whose document it is before they open it. It also helps you attach the correct version. You do not need a clever title, a keyword list, or a claim about being the best candidate.
Examples for common applications
These examples use a fictional applicant. Replace the name and role with your own details; keep the format consistent across the documents you submit.
- General application: Maya-Chen-Resume.pdf
- Role-specific application: Maya-Chen-Data-Analyst-Resume.pdf
- Employer requesting Word: Maya-Chen-Resume.docx
- Matching cover letter: Maya-Chen-Cover-Letter.pdf
- An application requiring a reference number: Maya-Chen-Resume-DA104.pdf, if the employer asks for that reference.
PDF or DOCX: choose the requested format
CareerOneStop recommends following the specified format and using PDF when no other format is requested. Export the document from your editor; changing a filename from .docx to .pdf does not convert the file.
Open the exported file before attaching it. Check page breaks, contact details, links, and whether you can select the text. If the application fills fields from your resume, inspect those fields and correct missing or scrambled information. A recognizable filename cannot repair an unreadable document.
Keep working versions separate from the attachment
Use folders or an application tracker for the company, submission date, and revision history. For example, keep Applications/Acme/Data-Analyst/2026-09-10/ locally and put Maya-Chen-Data-Analyst-Resume.pdf inside it. The folder carries your private organization; the attachment stays readable.
Before uploading, open the file from that folder and check the employer-specific wording. Save the submitted copy so you can refer to it during a recruiter call.
Filename mistakes to fix before sending
The examples below create ambiguity or expose your editing process. Rename the actual exported attachment, then verify that your email or application contains the renamed version.
- Resume.pdf: add your name so the owner is clear.
- Maya-Resume-FINAL-final-v7.pdf: remove internal revision notes.
- Maya-Chen-Resume.docx.pdf: export in the desired format and use the corresponding extension.
- Maya-Chen-SSN-1234.pdf: remove unnecessary sensitive identifiers.
- Best-Analyst-Hire-Me.pdf: use your name and document purpose instead.

Quick questions
Should I put the company name in my resume filename?
It is optional unless requested. A company-specific folder can be enough for your own records. If you include the company in the attachment name, verify it before every submission.
Does a resume filename improve my ATS score?
A clear filename helps identify and organize the document. It does not demonstrate job qualifications or replace readable content. Do not treat filename keywords as a scoring strategy.
